SNORT--I used that very same method on my truck! I have a '98 Toyota Tacoma, and the inner door latch is made kinda cheap, so I reinforced it like that too JB

That's gonna change this year Surflung. I'm gonna make the straps on the 2nd unit adjustable so anybody can dive them.

You may be able to find some touch-up-paint to match this at an auto store. If you feather the color in, you might get away just touching up that area: 1500 and 2000 grit paper will help with blending your colors...

- Said the only guy in the world who dives a fully operational, fully inspected and Hydro-tested UDS-1 diving system. That's gonna change this year Surflung. I'm gonna make the straps on the 2nd unit adjustable so anybody can dive them. Actually, the straps on the UDS-1 don't need adjustment. What needs adjustment is our thinking about how the straps go together. Realize that in Europe at the time, their tank systems did not use a waist strap, and the UDS-1 was designed in France along those lines. But a waist strap is needed in the USA market, so they put one on, but not at the waist; the straps went where the extra-long shoulder straps were put onto the unit. So, what to do? The best way is to adopt the European strap system, and take the waist straps off the UDS-1. Take that European buckle, and put it onto the weight belt. The EU divers used a weight belt with a crotch strap that hooked directly into the weight belt, all without a waist strap. That's how that European buckle system was originally intended to be used. You can best see this system in use by watching Cousteau's "World Without Sun," and watch Captain Cousteau on his first visit to the new undersea installation. He's wearing the four-tank scuba that he developed, ascends the ladder into the Starfish House, throws off the shoulder straps as one of the Oceanauts takes his tanks, and unhooks the crotch strap from his weight belt, which he leaves on until he goes over to the other area. So you really don't need to modify the UDS-1 strap system for all divers, only adopt the European system as it was originally intended. Watch at 8:40 to see what I'm talking about. I have been working on harness systems for scuba since the 1980s. When I got my UDS-1, I modified the harness first in the manner described above, and used the same harness system on the twin 45s that I am still using. I looked over the harness systems, and said, "What is different in other parts of the world?" I looked around, looked at the Cousteau systems, and tried them out. What I found is that the longer shoulder straps actually stabilize the unit on my back. "It doesn't swing around anymore," I would say to myself when diving. The little things about this harness system is that it works and keeps the unit down on my back. But because of the UDS-1's problems with buoyancy, I needed to weight it to get it to sit down on my back (see previous posts). Then I developed my four-point harness system, again without the waist strap. That system depended upon the Para-Sea BC, with its hip connectors. I had two straps coming down to a loop in the shoulder strap, and down further to the hip connector. This worked perfectly for the UDS, and also for backpacks, and a modified military harness too, both of which I am still using. Here is our older thread on the UDS-1 by U.S. Divers Company. Also, here is a Scubaboard thread on the UDS-1. John

Just added my safe 2nd Octopus regulator. Both regulators have matching dates now (1975) and the safe second regulator will say "Octopus" on it. Took some digging to find a hose long enough to go from the bottom of the housing around my back up to my face. My 2nd UDS-1 unit is getting closer. Tanks are done. Found a key missing part. Getting the fill hose fixed. Having a friend machine some missing parts for me. (The round part that screws into the fill hose block and mounts to the side of the plastic housing by the handle) I found a really nice shell when I was in Florida for Sea Hunt. No cracks at all in the plastic housing.

Awesome thread, I just picked up one off eBay. Can't wait to get it here and fixed up. I'm sure I'll have questions for you guys. How many of these do you think are still around being dove? Less than a dozen in the states?

As far as I know, I may have the only diving unit right now. Don's is getting closer. I saw that unit on eBay and it looks like everything was there. Hopefully that fill hose works and doesn't leak. If it does, we are working on a fix for them....
Come on up to Fortune Pond in May. I will be diving mine there!!

If I can get my unit up and running by then, I would make the drive up. I'd be coming from Dallas TX. Anyone want to hitch a ride up? I grew up diving in Lake Champlain, so cold/clear water is better than what we've got down here.
