I pulled this reg apart today. The seat (where the plunger contacts) has a small nick in it on one side, the other side has quite a few nicks. I needed a pretty potent magnifying glass to see them. Is there a way to clean this up? Maybe the old plunger (which has a piece missing from it) with a mild abrasive like toothpaste? Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

Are you talking about the removable HP seat? Just replace it. Several of us have NOS or good ones. Got nylon plungers, too.

I put this reg together today with the new seat, and...….. wala it does the exact same thing. IP runs up to about 200 psi, pops the second stage around 180, and free flows. When I shut the air off it leaks to about 160 and stays there. Anybody got any thoughts on what could be wrong here?

Yes: please check the condition of the HP-diaphragm. Is it too thin? John was having this same problem with his first generation Healthways Scubair: he discovered that it was worn, and too thin on the HP-side.
I seem to recall that you were playing around with a different diaphragm for this: there may be something weird with the height of the part that touches the actuator...

Thanks JB, I'll check the diaphragm. I ended up reusing the old one because the holder that came with the new diaphragm was different. I should also mention that I had a senior moment while I was working on it. I put it together without that tiny pin that goes from the plunger to the diaphragm. I'm thinking now that as you said the diaphragm is too thin causing the pin to hold the plunger off the seat or there is something going on with the pin or plunger. maybe for giggles I'll try the old plunger, or at least see if the new one is the same as the old one.

SNORT! So you didn't put the actuator pin/push rod in? I can see how hat would be problematic JB

Yup I forgot to put the pin in and it locked up tight. That leads me to believe that the seat/plunger system is sealing. When I put the pin in I had problems. Because of that I'm thinking something is causing the pin to prevent the plunger from sealing on the seat. JB you mentioned possibly the diaphragm which contacts the other end of the pin, I'm also going to compare the old plunger to the new one. There is a pin which is part of the plunger, I'm going to check how much of this pin sticks out of the new plunger vs the old one. I might even try resurfacing the old one as you said JB and see what happens.

A good way to check the pin is to put the pin/diaphragm in place, but without the locking nut and manually push it to see is the plunger is pushed back. You should be able to feel it move.

JB that's very kind of you to offer, thank you. This is still fun for me. I'm enjoying learning about how regulators work. I hope I'm not driving you guys crazy with all my questions. When I work on my 69 Roadrunner I have a pretty good idea of how the Chrysler guys did things, and what's wrong. I will make sure the adjuster is all the way out.

Ohhhh, cooool, a Roadrunner! I love anything that's not Ford or Chevy, I have a real soft spot for anything AMC or Studebaker though...

JB I love the old Chrysler products. Most car guys that like Chryslers go for the Roadrunners, Cudas, Chargers, and Challengers. I like all of those, but love the Furys and 300s too. Many years ago my brother had a Javelin, that was a cool car.

I dove my Hydro-Twin yesterday at High Rocks, and got some photos too. The dive was about 30 minutes long, using my twin 45s and the Hydro-Twin. The only problem is that I have shorter Voit grey hoses on it, and this setup puts my regulator pretty low on my back. So the mouthpiece is up around my neck. Bet the Hydro-Twin is really nice as a regulator, and I have a LP hose (not used, as my Pare-Sea BC had only an oral hose attachment), gauge (which is an old USD one, which leaked water and I need to do something about the O-ring), and my AIR I safe second.
