Working perfectly with the new poppet. I'll replace it with the stock one and send the new one to Fred. I'm using the tall LP adapter b/c the ORPV adjuster is stuck in the barrel and the screwdriver slot is buggered. I may need to use an easyout or drill it. No worries. This is a very nice breathing regulator!

Yes, there are two types of HP pin that I've seen. The Silvers have a different one than the IIIs. Here is an LP poppet I just made. It's a USD poppet puck cup and a brass stem I turned. It will have a 4-40 nut on it, when I get some SS nuts. I ordered and received the 4-40 nuts. But I can't find the poppet. Anywhere! I suppose I'll find it sooner or later. So I made a new one for Fred. Because I had a 5-40 nut lying there in the bench, I threaded it 5-40 instead of 4-40.

More changes. I decided the little flare that holds the puck in place isn’t wide enough with a 5-40 post, so I recut it and threaded it 4-40. The flare can’t be any bigger b/c it has to fit inside the LP volcano orifice. I felt the puck needed a bit more of a shelf to retain it.
BTW, I found the first VTP poppet. I put it in a baggie of LP poppets, where I’d be sure to remember I’d put it.
Geez.

Ingenious mods vance! Do you have a pic of the unmodified seat assembly? Is the original ‘holey’ LP seat co-moulded into the carrier or a replaceable part?

Thanks, Graeme. I don’t know if the original poppet soft seat is cast or a puck. I’ve never had one that I wanted to destroy just to find out. None of mine have been bad!

Interesting, Fred! Did you glue the puck on? If it works, there must be enough adjustment in the lever to make up for the extra thickness?
I had thought about making a new poppet with a cup for a replaceable puck: something like the old style I made but with the correct stem size. I'd be concerned about the soft silicone puck extruding or deforming without something like a cup to contain it.
My concern about making one is the small diameter stem. I suppose threading a stainless stem and screwing on a USD cup and lock nut should work.
Another thought is to chuck the poppet up in the lathe and cut away the old seat to form a cup. I don't have a bad new style poppet, so I can't experiment with that idea. I also wonder if the bad poppet seat could be simply cleaned up by turning?

Hello Phil, At the first tries, I glue the complete puck, but like this the top of the shaft was a bit low, and the opening was not enough, but no leak. At the second tries ( cutting a bleu puck in the middle on the thick is not easy) , it was not enough squarely sitting. The third tries was the good. I glue with a sort loctite, that I already use to glue a puck on a Broxton lever . I have no leak, but I just let under pressure 15 minutes, I this week will check during a hour. Than check the seat. And then go dive if everything is fine. Finally I don't go dive this weekend, it rained all the weekend. Interesting, Fred! Did you glue the puck on? If it works, there must be enough adjustment in the lever to make up for the extra thickness? I first heard about this mod from Enrique Dauner, who advised to cut off the old seat forward of the X guide (which is ~1mm) down to the metal to maintain original seat height. Glue on a new LP disc punched from 1mm silicone or neoprene rubber, 70 Shore A. OD 8mm ID 1.5mm to allow a small amount of compression to the shaft. He used the Aquaseal glue and seemed to work quite well if you compress the disc evenly as the glue sets.

Dang it! I just picked up another Snark III. It's in pretty nice shape on the outside. We'll see what the innards look like when I get it. These are starting to follow me home, like the AquaMasters used to.

The Snark arrived today. Unfortunately, it was poorly packed and got some dents in the cover from banging into the Northill. Otherwise, it looks new. I doubt it was ever used, or close to it.
I hooked it up to a tank and it works. Even the exhaust valve seems to be ok. I haven't yet disassembled it, but took a peek down the intake horn. Looks great from what I could see.
