Hi all, Thought I'd start a new thread on my HW Scuba rev1 project. You've possibly already seen the teardown pics, but I'll post some here for comparison. Here it is barn fresh, as they say:
And here are some showing some progress:
It's looking a lot healthier now! The secondary diaphragm cleaned up pretty well and is fairly flexible. I haven't worked on the primary except to wash it off and smear it with silicone grease. The hinge pins on the lever assembly are still badly rusted and will need to be replaced, but the levers are free so I can try it out before trying to replace the pins. I'm gluing up a duckbill tonight, and will take it out of the clamp tomorrow or the next day when the glue sets up. I'll post some pics on how that comes out. I'm hoping to get my tank in a couple of days so I can test things. Phil

Looks good my friend But your levers don't look like yummy Teriyaki-sesame seasoning any longer JB

OK! All done, except for new stainless hinge pins on the levers! Diaphragms are lubed, duckbill is in and working, hose loop installed with new mushroom valves. Stole some parts off the Divair until I get a new circlip and sintered filter. Exhale seems not bad. Will see what happens when I hook it up. I should be getting my tank tomorrow! I'll let you all know how it works (or doesn't).

Here is the duckbill prototype. I made several with different sizes of inner tube and different adhesives. The winner was a rather too large tube glued up with Loctite Ultra gel superglue. It sticks better than the other things I tried (although I'm waiting for the glue to dry on one more that has RTV black silicone).

My duckbill is the basic mod by the guy on youtube, but I used both the retaining clip and I rolled it over the top of the horn, and instead of RTV, I used superglue. I couldn't find a tube that was exactly right. They were all either too wide or too narrow. The narrow one was pretty hard to blow through, but the too large one might not close up correctly, although it is significantly easier to exhale through. A pool test with tell. Phil

If you haven't already dived a healthways SCUBA, you will be somewhat surprised by the sensitivity of the very large diaphragm. Thanks for keeping us informed.
Enjoy,
John

I unclamped and installed the newest trial duckbill this morning. I glued it up with RTV black. The stuff really holds! I think, overall, it is more flexible than the superglue. I also made this duckbill out of a light racing tire tube, and its resistance is less than the thicker walled tubes. It exhales easier, even though it's a shade too narrow. I can't find a tube that's just right. Too big or too small. Here it is with its family:

Here's that nasty valve lever assembly after grinding off the old rusty pins and punching them out. I threaded one side of the I beam on both ends with 6-32 threads and then opened up the holes on the other side and the levers on both sides. The stainless 6-32 screw slips through three holes and screws into the fourth. I added a stainless nut with blue loctite. That'll do 'er! I'll clean up the rest of the rust and it'll be good to go! D'oh! I'll grind the excess off, too!

Some people get all bent out of shape 'cause it ain't original: sometimes that's valid, but other times, other times, it's a personal touch that says a person valued a piece of equipment and went out of their way to make it work. Probably my favorite thing like that is my J.C. Higgins lantern, the one on the right, with the improvised nut on top: JB

We better be a bit more discrete about this whole Healthways thing... The less people that know about them, the better..ha ha!!! How many of us on here are into Healthways now?, five or six? Mark

Finally, I got my tank back! I had a re-threaded (3/4 inch to 1/2 inch pipe) valve installed, so the reg doesn't hit the tank.
I attached all the regs and they all work great out of the water. My scuba rev 1 freeflows a bit of air, which is probably just that the diaphragm arm is too high. It settles down after the first breath, but there's a tiny bit escaping.I'll take the front off and see if it's the valve.
The Divair blew air at first like a sumbich. I took the front cover off and took off the diaphragm, and fooled around with the TWO adjusting screws and found that one allows a bit of slack after the height is adjusted by the other one. Fixed! Seems to breathe fine! We'll see.
My two Deluxes seem to be perfect. Pool test!!
I have one more Scuba rev 1 to go! I'm making the duckbill for it (a new revision), so it isn't ready yet.
I'll keep you posted!

Things need to be fixed to be functional, sometimes. Isn't it better to fix/modify a piece rather than junk it?

Here's an interesting pic I took of three different Healthways nylon valve plungers and springs. Although it came out of one of my regs, I don't swear to the middle spring being OEM.
So, we've got black, translucent and white plungers. The translucent one in the center is obviously longer than the other two. It appears that the spring on the left is larger in diameter. The center one has not been flattened on the ends like the other two, and the one on the right has a definite bend in it. I decided not to bore you or myself with measuring them. Yet. Phil

If I recall correctly, the one in my SCUBA is like the one in the centre and more of a translucent. Mark
